  1. Sorry for necroposting but I thought it worth mentioning that one of the legal responsibilities of top management of a publicly traded company is to maximize shareholder value. It becomes a balance of;does it increase company value? does the law allow it? does negative publicity outweigh the immediate return?

    Taking the ethical high road can easily mean a lost job, battling lawsuits for years, and if at the end your competition wasn’t just shady but broke the law, your lack being able to get a job is hardly offset by them paying a couple percent of their profits in fines.

    Short version? Astroturfing and other shady practices are almost legally required of industries right now.
