Grant Richie Jr DDS joins the Nerds this week to talk about the Skeptical Community or if you prefer the ‘Skeptical Community?’ is it a thing? Should it be a thing? What can we do to make it better is that not really important.
Lyme Disease has never been in Australia, yet many people claim to have caught it. Ross joins the Nerds once again to talk through this controversial topic. Are people being coned by ‘specialist’ labs that charge large fees and always seem to return a positive result? Is there an unknown epidemic underway? And of course what is Lyme disease anyway?
What is wrong with the news? A recurring nerd joins us again in the form of Michael Marshall to talk how the News is flooded by PR statements, often pretending to be science.
The Nerds try to talk about advertising and how constructed outrage is used to push products and ideas. From ‘Science’ stories that are really adverts to PR companies asking to advertise on science videos. We also take a trip into the psyche of Myles Power.
Apologies for James’s terrible audio he is an idiot who selected his internal laptop mic and not the fancy podcast mic.
Myles and James review the recent report from the WHO’s IARC devision on glyphosate. In May 2015 the IARC released a press release detailing their findings on 5 herbicides, one being glyphosate, the active ingredient in roundup. This report is a shockingly poor example of scientific reporting and is written in such a manner to mislead the readers. The authors use of words and lack of citations is of real concern and paints an unfair, potentially biased view on the safety of glyphosate.
This week on TLONs Myles and James are joined by David a evolutionary psychologist. Recently evolutionary psychology has been misinterpreted and painted in a negative light. Evolutionary psychology uses what we have learnt from the theory of Evolution and applies it to human psychology. On the face of it this should not have attracted much scorn yet today a number of people are happy to criticsise the field due to political belief.
Myles and James are joined by Lorraine, who is involved in a campaign to highlight Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS). A ‘treatment’ aimed at curing everything from HIV to cancer. It is also being used to ‘treat’ Autistic people. What is MMS? It is bleach. High concentration bleach (27%).
This is a clear example of endangering peoples lives, and some what insidiously there are even parts of the groups forum related to how you can hide the use of this ‘treatment’ from the authorities.
This week on the league of nerds Myles and James talk about some times science was badly reported.
This week Myles and James talk about science on youtube and what youtube (google) plans for the future of educational content!
Welcome to the first of many podcasts from Myles and James. This time we’re talking about the MMR hoax.
