Myles and James talk about one of the fantastic inventions of the modern era, the GMO Golden rice. This is a rice that produces vitamin A (actually make the precursor that the body turns into vitamin A). A recent Greenpeace video explains how they are ok with children going blind and over 600000 dying. Golden rice could be part of the solution to this complex issue of malnutrition in the developing world. AntiGmo groups however see its utility as a slippery slope into further uses of GMO products. At best this is cutting off your nose to spite your face at worst it is the wilful endangerment of people less fortunate. Millions of people are left blind due to vitamin A deficiency and over 600000 die each year. It is easy to be antiGMO when your bellies are full and your kids aren’t blind.
Myles and James are once again joined by Gaz from Leicester Skeptics in the Pub. This week we ask “Is Greenpeace good for the environment?’
